“Folklore is our love”
Folklore ensemble Hornad is a folk-art group representing Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice. Thanks to more than 50years tradition the ensemble became one of the tops within Slovakia. Main idea of its activities is to maintain dance and music tradition of eastern Slovakia and searching for new ways of their interpretation and stage presentation.
The history of Hornád began in 1963 with the original name Stavbár. In 1974 the ensemble has been renamed to Dargov and since 1992 it wears the current name – Hornád (according to river that flows thru Košice). With new millennium Hornád joined new folklore stream which decided to recover traditional and authentic interpretation of traditional songs and dances and became therefore one of the most progressive Slovak folklore groups.
Since 2011 Hornád is under financial, material, and thought-auspices of Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Košice. Thanks to academic status the ensemble is allowed to take part on competition between university folklore ensembles “Academická Nitra” and “Akademický Zvolen”. In 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 Hornád became the laureate of this competition. The ensemble represents university also on biggest folklore festivals in Slovakia like Východná, Myjava, Detva and many more. In 2016 Hornád also won the grand prix of Mikulas Senko as a part of folklore festival in Dubnica nad Váhom. Group´s solo dancers represent Hornád year by year very successfully on the national dance competition Šaffova Ostroha.
In 2014 the ensemble has been covered by civic organization FS HORNÁD. The choreographers of the ensemble are top personalities within Slovak choreography like Ervín Varga, Vladimír Michalko, Marianna Svoreňová and Štefan Štec.
